"I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit..."

Rite of Baptism

"Holy Baptism is the basis for the whole of Christian life, the way to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and become sharers in her mission..." (CCC 1213)

Baptismal Preparation for Infants and Children

Congratulations on choosing to celebrate your child's baptism here at St. Stephen the Martyr.  We are honored to be part of this special step in your child's faith journey.  The Catholic Church has always taught and respected the understanding that parents are the primary educators in the faith of their children.  Our Baptismal preparation is designed to assist you, parents and godparents, in raising these children in the faith.   Please allow ample time to complete this planning.  Expectant mothers are encouraged to contact the office before their baby is born.

Baptismal Preparation Class

Parents wishing to baptize their child must be registered active members of St. Stephen the Martyr parish for 3 months prior to the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism.  A Baptismal Preparation Class must have been attended at St. Stephen the Martyr or another Catholic parish within the last 3 years.  This class is usually offered monthly, on the second Sunday of the month at 12:00 noon.   Some months, there is no Baptism Class scheduled.   Please check with the parish office to find the next date of the Baptism Class.

Please make arrangements for a babysitter as we do not provide babysitting services.   Please contact the Parish Office at 770-381-7488 to register for the class.

Baptisms are scheduled AFTER both parents have taken the Baptism Class.

In the Baptism Class, the guidelines for Godparents/Sponsors will be discussed.   If the Godparent is not a member of St. Stephens,  a “sponsor certificate” is required from the pastor of the Catholic Church where the godparent is registered, indicating that they are a practicing, confirmed Catholic, and eligible to be a Baptismal Sponsor.

We understand that every family is unique and that there are often special circumstances.  Should you wish to discuss your child's baptismal celebration, please feel free to contact us. To register for a class, or for any other questions relating to the celebration of this important sacrament for your child, please contact the main office.

Baptismal Preparation for Older Children (Grade 3 through 12)

If your child is in Grade 3 or older and has not been baptized, we offer a specialized preparation program that acknowledges your child's age, experiences, and unique circumstances.  Depending on the age of your child, additional preparation and formation may be offered to also celebrate their First Reconciliation (Sacrament of Reconciliation), First Communion (Sacrament of Eucharist), and the Sacrament of Confirmation.  You are asked to contact Kathy Roger to discuss how we can best work with you in your child's preparation to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism.

Baptismal Preparation for Adults

The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated for adults as the culmination of the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA), the process where you are welcomed into St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church and into the Catholic faith.  If you have questions or are interested in learning about the process of becoming a Catholic as an Adult, please contact Kathy Roger, Coordinator of RCIA.
